Karen Read has already had the trial of the decade — twice. Prosecutors said she backed her SUV into her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe, and left him in the snow in January 2022. Her defense said she was framed and that the investigation itself was the scandal. In June 2025, a jury acquitted her of murder, manslaughter, and leaving the scene; she was convicted only of drunk driving and got a year of probation.
If you thought that was the end, welcome to civil court — where the burden of proof is lower and nobody's acquittal closes the book. The O'Keefe family's wrongful-death lawsuit is moving again, and this month Read's lawyers asked the court to throw it out. Meanwhile, Read has sued Massachusetts State Police and Canton officers herself, alleging she was framed — and she's facing a separate defamation suit too.
Three courtrooms, three different fights, one death that Massachusetts still argues about at every dinner table. Jurors: should an acquittal end a case — or is civil court the second jury every defendant should expect?
